Time for another Weekend Writing Warriors snippet. Every Sunday, I join a bunch of writers through a blog hop and post an 8-10 sentence snippet of my current project. You can click on the image to see what everyone else is up to.
I know it’s been a few weeks since you last heard from Lotte and her family. Travis and I were busy with family stuff, but we were also having a great time at Comic Con! You can imagine it took me away from my computer all weekend.
Last time, Lotte tested a nettle wristband that she made, inspired by a fairytale that coincides with her current circumstances. This conversation takes place right after Peder’s scars disappear and he’s cured.
“Can we just reuse this for all of you?” Dad said, his eyes glistening with equal parts relief and anxiety.
“It’s really hard to get off,” Peder said. It’s not like I tied it super tight, but upon closer inspection, the frayed ends of the material had actually interwoven with each other so it look like one continuous band. Everyone was in awe.
“You just wear it, bud, until we figure out the next step,” Mom said, “does it hurt?”
“No,” Peder answered, still tugging at my creation.
“Yeah, it worked!” Ben said like a cheer. “Time to make some more for the rest of us. It’s hard to stay this good-looking with this connect-the-dots look.”
The other boys shoved him around playfully.
“Well, you heard Mr. Humility,” Alex laughed, “looks like this family is harvesting nettles!”
I shared this part because I wanted to establish some of the “magic rules” in Lotte’s curse. They run parallel with the rules in the fairytale but I’m trying to make it Lotte’s own story. How well did I do? Until next week, you can check out my other snippets here. You can also learn more about the novel, Speechless, here. Don’t forget to comment below if you’ve got a snippet to share as well! Compliments and constructive insight are equally welcome.
I think we could all use some of Lotte’s handiwork. Good snippet.
