Time for another Weekend Writing Warriors snippet. Every Sunday, I join a bunch of writers through a blog hop and post an 8-sentence snippet of my current project. You can click on the link to see what everyone else is up to. Travis will give you his snippet tomorrow to spread things out. Expect separate posts from us this week and from here on out.
Okay, so last week was kinda rough; I applogize if last week’s post was super confusing. I don’t think I gave enough information leading in to help you guys jump in. So this week will be better.
So I’m working on a scene quite a ways into the novel. Surprise, surprise, Ilsi learns a crazy secret about her best friend: he’s an Animan. Which sort of has the same rules as being a werewolf, only in this world, you could turn into just about anything—so I guess a bit like Animorphs.
Ilsi finds out because Tyk transforms in front of her and as an animal attacks her and turns her into an Animan, too. This scene takes place after they’ve both spent a rough night in the woods and they’re both back to normal. Ilsi naturally has quite a few questions about what happened and what this will mean for the two of them.
“You kissed me,” Ilsi interrupted, “in case you were too delusional to notice. That’s how you brought this upon me.”
Tyk colored a bit, shaking his head.
“That’s ridiculous—you don’t pass a curse like this to someone else over a kiss,” Tyk answered. “Did I scrape you or something?”
“You’re just spinning me around,” Ilsi grumbled as she held her tangled hair up and away from her neck to help. “What is it?”
“You’ve got a gash down your spine—I truly am an epic asshole.”
There was a bit more exchange in between these lines, but I cut out what I could to keep it at eight sentences. Check out other snippets here. And comment below if you’ve got a snippet to share as well!
P.S. If you were cursed to be turned into an animal, which one would you prefer? Which would be the worst?
I like it, Wit! Their dialogue is excellent. They sound just like young people–and reacted emotionally just as I’d think they would. “…epic asshole.” Spot on! Nicely done. 🙂
From the animal kingdom–I’d prefer to be a bird. Not a raptor, or even any type of carnivorous bird for that matter. I don’t think I could eat bugs or worms. lol. A seed-eater,. And I’d have to be able to fly, so chicken wouldn’t do. 😉
The worst animal? A rabbit. As if being werebunny wouldn’t be bad enough, but to be on the bottom of the werefoodchain.
Yeah, bunnies aren’t the way to go–predator Animen are usually very hangry.
Oh, wow, that would be an upsetting situation and put some strain on the relationship. 🙂
I think I’d go for some big predator, just to be on the safe side. I love tigers, so just turn me into a big, scary cat.
Yeah, it seems like the higher up the food chain you are, the likelihood you’ll live to tell the tale. 😉 I had a lot of fun with this concept and will feature an army-like group of all different kinds of Animen.
Seems Tyk has a lot to apologize for! Enjoying the worldbuilding and the concepts. Great snippet!
A nice, realistic piece of dialogue here… and definite hints of future trauma to follow.
